Proof of Funds Requirement Increases for Canada Study Permit Applicants

Apr 012026

If you are planning to apply for a study permit to study in Canada, take note: as of September 1, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is raising the minimum financial requirements for proving your ability to support yourself (and your accompanying dependents, if applicable). This adjustment ensures that international students are adequately prepared to cover their living expenses during their stay in Canada

Studying in all Provinces Except Québec:

For study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025, the new financial thresholds will apply:

Number of family members (including the applicant)

Studying in Québec:

If you are applying for a study permit to study in Québec, you must provide proof of sufficient financial resources, as specified by the ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI).

In addition to tuition fees, international students who would like to study in Quebec need to demonstrate their ability to cover:

  • Living Expenses
  • Settlement Fees for the First Year
  • Health and Hospital Insurance Costs (if applicable)

Applicants must demonstrate that they have in the period between January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, the following amounts. Amount of funds vary depending on the applicant’s age and the number of accompanying dependents included in their study permit application:

Number of family members (including the applicant)
