Shift to Mandatory Online Applications - Hong Kong Extension of Stay

Feb 202025

As of January 17, 2025, the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) has implemented a significant change in the way applications for various immigration policies and schemes are submitted. At Rothe International Canada, we are committed to keeping our clients informed about these important changes. Below, we outline the key details of this transition and its implications for applicants.

In a move to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, the ImmD has made online submission mandatory for the following extension of stay admission policies and schemes:

  1. Top Talent Pass Scheme
  2. Quality Migrant Admission Scheme
  3. General Employment Policy (covering both employment and investment as entrepreneurs)
  4. Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals
  5. Capital Investment Entrant Scheme
  6. Technology Talent Admission Scheme
  7. Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG)
  8. Admission Scheme for the Second Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents
  9. Residence as Dependants

This means that extension of stay applications for these categories will no longer be accepted in person, by post, or through drop-in boxes. All submissions must now be completed via the ImmD’s online platform.

What Does This Mean for Applicants?

The shift to mandatory online applications is designed to provide a faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly process. However, it also requires applicants to familiarize themselves with the ImmD’s electronic submission system and ensure that all required documentation is uploaded correctly.

For individuals and businesses unfamiliar with the online platform, this change may initially seem daunting. Common challenges include navigating the system, understanding technical and documentation requirements, and ensuring compliance with submission guidelines. Any errors or omissions during the online submission process may also lead to potential delays.
